Equine Insulin Resistance Thyroid Powder

1. Equine Insulin Resistance Thyroid Background
Most Insulin Resistant horses do have low thyroid function.  They test in the bottom of the normal range and we need it in the top of the normal range for optimal performance.

A.  Insulin Resistant horses run at 0.6, 0.8, 1.1….on a normal range of 0.5 to 3.0, and we need closer to the 2.5 range.  Why?  Thyroid Powder is proven in a Tufts University Veterinary School study by Dr. N. Franks to help Insulin Resisance.  (Brilliant Study)  “It improved insulin sensitivity by 2 times and increased insulin disposal (lowered in horses.  BlueStarClick here to see Dr. Frank’s study in the AJVR, 2005, on the Effects of Oral administration of Levothyroxine sodium on concentrations of plasma lipids

B.  Thyroid may help in Neuropathic pain in the feet.

• See Mayo Clinic information on low thyroid levels helped by thyroid medicine.   BlueStarClick here to see Low Thyroid can “cause fluid retention resulting in swollen tissues that exert pressure on peripheral nerves.” Dr. Nippoldt’s information on Hypothyroidism: Can it cause peripheral neuropathy?

• See where nerve regeneration was 200% faster while on thyroid medicines.   BlueStarClick here to see Dr. McQuarrie’s study in J. Neurol Sci. on Nerve regeneration and thyroid hormone treatment.

• See where nerve cells do have thyroid receptors.  “This could explain the greater effect on T3 (Thyroid meds T4 converts to T3) on nerve regeneration compared with the effect of any growth factor or adhesion molecule.”  BlueStarClick here to see Dr. Barakat-Walter’s study in J. Neurobiol. on the Role of thyroid hormones and their receptors in peripheral nerve regeneration.

• See where injecting thyroid hormone into a cut nerve “produced a lasting effect on peripheral nerve regeneration.”  BlueStarClick here to see Dr. Wang’s study on the Role of thyroid hormone in peripheral nerve regeneration.

• See where thyroid meds helps in healing in nerve tissue. “Produce a stimulating and lasting effect on peripheral nerve regeneration.”  BlueStarClick here to see Dr. Voinesco’s study in Exp Neurol. on Local Administration of Thyroid Hormones in Silicone Chamber Increases Regeneration of Rat Transected Sciatic Nerve.

2.  Equine Insulin Resistance Thyroid Testing

A.  Serum is collected in a red top or tiger top tube.
B.  Sent to a lab (local labs are good) and results back to you in 24 hours.  Quick test.
C. Get the number of the “Total T4 Level” DO NOT accept “it is normal” – get the number.  1.1 is normal but not optimal for Insulin Sensitivity.  We want in the high normal range.

3.  Equine Insulin Resistance Thyroid Treatment

A.  I recommend only Lloyds Labs product: Thyro-L.  Seen thyroid numbers improve quickly on this in only 14 days.  Also FDA approved for canine use, only approved Lloyds Labs med version.   BlueStarClick here for the JAVMA article on other types unapproved by FDA (2016).
B.  For 500 pounds and under, start at 1 scoop a day (tiny blue scoop in can) = 12 mg, 1 time a day.  Retest in 30 days to see if need to adjust.
C.  For over 500 pounds, start at 2 scoop a day = 24 mg, 1 time a day.  Retest in 30 days to see if need to adjust.
D.  Some advocate purposeful thyroid hormone overdoses.  I do not recommend creating a hormone imbalance to treat a hormone imbalance.  Does not make sense.  Also hyperthyroid has drawbacks: bone weakness, body temperature increased so intolerant to heat, decreases in muscle, can make edgy or over excited.
E.  Beware – if on Bute, Banamine, Previcox…you can not get accurate thyroid level test.  These meds create a false low number.  You need to be off those a full 14 days prior to a thyroid test.   BlueStarClick here for the article on Bute’s effect on Blood Thyroid Tests.
F.  Retest Total T4 levels every Spring.

G.  Be aware, high iron containing supplements will interfere with Thyroid Powder action. BlueStarClick here to see Why High Iron Is Not Good.

4.  Equine Insulin Resistance Thyroid Connection to COPD Breathing

A.  Many horses have COPD bad breathing issues and Insulin Resistance. Thyroid meds helps both conditions at the same time.  Thyroid meds can help respiratory muscles function better.
B.  COPD actually actively lowers Thyroid Hormone.  So if COPD and Insulin Resistant, then you need to supplement.   BlueStarClick here to see 4 articles on how COPD effects Thyroid.

COPD Lowers Thyroid Function.
So if IR & COPD, need Thyroid Powder even more.
