Matching the Name with the Horse – Choosing the Perfect Name for your New Companion

Choosing the Perfect Name for your New Companion

Choosing the perfect name for your horse can be a difficult decision. You want to make sure you do your animal justice when choosing a name, considering that’s the name it will have for its whole life! When picking out a name, you should make sure it fits your animal’s personality, as well as choosing a name that is original and creative.

Coming up with a name can be a hard process, but it is definitely worth it in the end. Here are a few tips for picking out the perfect name for your animal:

Personality Traits

When you first get your new horse, it is important to bond with it. While bonding with your animal, take a list of its personality traits – is your animal energetic? Laid back? Gentle? Taking notice of your animal’s characteristics can help you with the naming process, as well as help you to get to know your new companion on a more personal level.

For instance, if you notice that your animal is quick on his or her feet, Boaz would be a great name! From the Hebrew word meaning “swiftness,” Boaz is a well-fitting name for a fast animal who loves running.

Physical Characteristics

As well as taking notice of your animal’s personality, make sure to observe your animal’s physical appearance. Is your horse brown, white, black, or a mixture of different colors? Does your animal have any spots or birthmarks? Finding these unique characteristics on your animal can aid with the naming process.

For example, if you notice that your horse has any unusual markings, try to figure out what the shape of the mark looks like to you. Does the mark resemble a coin? Penny or Nickel would be a great name to match. Don’t be afraid to get creative and fun with this process. Original names are always more meaningful.

If you are still having trouble coming up with a name, check out the list below of a few fun titles that may just be perfect for your animal:

  • Sebastian – St. Sebastian, the patron saint of athletes, is a fitting name for an athletic and energetic horse.
  • Alaska – Do you love traveling? Give your horse a worldly name to represent the places you have been, or would like to go with your animal.
  • Atlas – This unique title comes from Greek mythology. Atlas was known for bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders; perfect for strong-willed and powerful horses.
  • Noir – The French word meaning “black,” this is a creative name that can represent your animal’s unique coloring.
