Spring Outdoor Activities for You and Your Horse

Spring is a great time to get your horse physically and mentally active. Being stuck inside during the winter can give your animal a lot of pent up energy that is just waiting to be released. Here are a few ideas if you are looking for entertaining outdoor activities for you and your horse:

Find a Trail

After being inside all winter getting into the fresh air as much as possible is important for your horse. Find a trail that matches your horse’s skill sets; if your horse doesn’t like the water or gets spooked by unfamiliar objects pick a trail that goes through an open field instead of one in the woods. If your horse is a seasoned trail rider you can find a scenic route that will be relaxing for both you and your horse. This is also a great activity to do with other riders!

Find a River or Pond

Now that it’s getting warmer out, going for a walk to a river or pond is a great way to cool down in these rising temperatures. Some horses are afraid of the water because they don’t know what’s in it, if this is the case getting your horse familiar with water will build their confidence. Let your horse wade through the water and splash around. As well as overcoming their fears and having a lot of fun, this is a great way for your animal to get rid of that built up energy from the winter.

Teach Your Horse a New Trick

Who says you can’t teach an old horse new tricks? Teaching your horse a new skill will not only get them moving physically, but mentally as well. Teaching your horse how to pick things up on command is a simple, useful trick for you and your animal (especially if you drop something when out on a ride – there’s no need to get off your horse!). Build an Obstacle Course

Horses are naturally curious animals. To encourage this curiosity, build an obstacle course and have your animal try to work their way out of it. As well as being physically and mentally stimulating, obstacle courses are a great way to get your animal accustomed to objects they may have never seen before. Place a plastic bag or soccer ball in its path to show that these items do not pose a threat, so that way if you ever do come across objects like these when out riding, your horse will not get frightened.

Horse Spring Activities

Join Local Competitions

Competition season is right around the corner! Whether your horse is skilled in vaulting, showmanship, or dressage, competing is a great way to bond with your animal. Competitions can not only increase your horses physical and mental health but also the companionship you have with your animal. Participating in local competitions also allows for friendships to form with other horses and riders in your area.

Spring Cleaning

Although this may not be the most exciting activity Spring is the best time to clean your stable, pasture or horse. Go through and make sure no damage was made to your stable and pasture- look for any fencing damage, inspect all stable tack and replace if necessary and clean all stalls, mats and bedding. Make sure your horse is ready for spring and that all vaccinations and deworming are up to date. Lastly, help your horse shed their winter coat so they comfortable in the warmer weather.

Caring for your horse’s physical and mental well being through outdoor activities is key to maintaining a healthy and happy horse. Don’t forget that maintaining their health through nutrition and supplements is also critical. At Equine Medical and Surgical Associates, we’ve developed a line of supplements to address all of your horse’s needs from summer eczema to insulin resistance so that you can always get the best out of your best friend.
